Various measurement methods
Various measuring methods are suitable for level measurement in bulk silos.
Is point level measurement with a level switch or continuous level measurement with a level sensor suitable for your application?
We would be happy to advise you on which MBA measuring devices are suitable for your application.
Level Sensors
Many suppliers of level sensors advertise the benefits of continuous level measurement.
These measuring devices - known as level meters or level sensors - can record the fill level in silos and bunkers in real time. Users can therefore call up information about the fill level at any time and integrate it into their process control system.
However, if reliable fill level monitoring is required, continuous measuring methods are often supplemented by limit level monitoring. Various measuring methods are suitable for this type of level measurement.
The MBA experts will introduce you to the main differences.
Level Switches
At first glance, it seems logical to continuously monitor the fill level of a bulk silos.
However, the measuring conditions often overtax the sensitive sensor technology of continuous measuring methods. If a reliable circuit is required, then the path always leads to point level measurement.
For level measurement in bulk silos, where extreme temperatures prevail, heavy bulk solids pelt down on the measuring devices or there is even a risk of explosion, robust measuring devices are required without a lot of maintenance. Our level switches are heavy-duty, wear-free and extremely precise. They strike when fixed fill levels are reached in the silos. This means you can focus on more important things than monitoring the fill level of your silo.
At MBA Instruments, we recommend measuring devices for point level measurement in bulk silos.
Rocket technology is not needed in the field of level measurement. But just like a spaceship or a lunar vehicle, a level measuring device must be able to withstand a lot.
This is because level measurement in applications with bulk solids is often challenging due to the often explosive properties of these materials.
Bulk solids can be in the form of fine powders, granules or other solid particles, and many of them are flammable.
Extensive safety measures are required to minimise the risk of dust explosions in silos and bunkers.
Measuring devices for level measurement and point level measurement must therefore be designed to meet the high requirements in such environments.
Level sensors and level indicators should be certified according to explosion protection standards in order to be used safely in potentially explosive atmospheres.
For example, level sensors can minimise the risk of sparking. And our level indicators can withstand the stresses of demanding bulk goods environments thanks to their robust design. They are designed to minimise dust deposits and contamination.
When customised to your requirements, every additional feature can be an additional source of error. That's why our level gauges come without any unnecessary technical accessories. They do their job.
And let's be honest, surely you have better things to do than monitor the fill level of your bulk silos yourself, right?

Level measurement quickly explained: In continuous and point level measurement, we are dealing with measuring devices that can detect the fill level of media in a container.
Different liquids or bulk solids in silos or other industrial containers can be measured. The selection of the appropriate measuring method depends primarily on the medium to be filled. During level measurement, the measured values are converted into an electrical signal, which is integrated into the control loop of the process control system.
With point level measurement, it works like this: when the previously defined point levels are reached, the measured values are transmitted via switching contacts that are connected to a permanently installed point level switch.
As soon as the fill level reaches the predefined limit values, a signal is triggered that triggers appropriate measures, such as stopping the filling process. This method uses level switches, including our high-quality rotating paddle detectors.
Our customised solutions can be used across all industries and enable companies to make their production processes more efficient and minimise downtime.
With our precise level measurement, companies have reliable control over their processes and can increase their efficiency and reduce costs. This is because accurate level measurement helps to optimise production processes, avoid overflow and comply with safety standards.
The advantages of level measurement at a glance:
Continuous measurement vs. point level measurement
Continuous level measurement and point level measurement are two different approaches to level measurement in containers or tanks.
In continuous level measurement, the fill level of a medium is monitored and measured in real time. Continuous measurement is carried out to obtain accurate information about the changing fill level. This method enables accurate monitoring and control of processes by providing continuous data that enables comprehensive analysis and optimisation.
Point level measurement, on the other hand, measures the fill level to determine whether it has reached a predefined mark or limit, for example whether the container is full or empty. It is a discrete measurement that simply determines whether the fill level has reached a certain position or not. This method is often used to trigger alarms when a certain fill level is reached. This prevents overflows or empty pumps.
The choice between the two approaches depends on the specific requirements of the application.
The installation conditions for MBA level measuring devices play a decisive role in their efficient and reliable operation. The installation location and installation requirements must be carefully considered to ensure accurate measurement results and trouble-free installation.
The mounting location of level gauges can vary depending on the application. There are generally two common options for installation:
This method involves installing the measuring device from the top of the container. It is particularly suitable for containers with large access openings or open containers.
Here, the measuring device is inserted into the side of the container wall. This installation method enables accurate level measurement without disturbing the contents of the container.
The distance between the level indicator and the container wall is crucial to ensure accurate measurement results. Too small a distance can lead to measurement errors. It is also important to consider the distance to the filling and emptying of the container to avoid possible interference during these processes.
The installation requirements also include the size of the container opening through which the measuring device is installed. It should be sufficiently dimensioned to allow installation as well as maintenance and service work. Ideally, the level gauges should be installed in an empty container so that the installation can be carried out safely and easily. In some cases, however, installation in a partially filled tank may be necessary, which requires special precautions.
